Running Injuries

During the marathon season we are often called upon to help out with niggles or more serious issues prior to the event. Sometimes we are expected to work miracles the week before the event – not ideal!

It’s always nice to get feedback afterwards, and our pictures share two after this year’s London Marathon. Both gentlemen consulted for advice only.  Both were advised to work on their strength.  Both were reassured and encouraged. And both did amazingly well – all credit to them for their incredible hard work and commitment!  The London Marathon on a hot day is no mean feat!!

If you are training for any event it’s always a good idea to seek advice in good time so that you know how to treat it and in order to prevent it becoming a more chronic condition.  Often small adjustments in running technique can be made, perhaps prescription of insoles or footwear advice, or specific areas can be strengthened, making all the difference.

We have a treadmill at Viney Hall and video analysis can be really helpful.  A physiotherapy assessment will look at  the whole body, joint ranges and strength in order to identify limitations or weaknesses that may be contributing to niggles now and potentially more serious pains later.

Our podiatrist, Olga Jones, holds a clinic once a month at Viney Hall and, with her additional assessment tools such as ultrasound scanning and force plates, diagnosis is often assisted.  Olga is  a specialist in foot and ankle conditions and can be very helpful to runners.

We make use of a variety of techniques such as ultrasound, pulsed shortwave therapy, laser (podiatrist), injection therapy, soft tissue techniques, joint mobilisations and strapping to assist in recovery.

My advice is: address the small niggles before they become big ones!
