Specialist hand therapy will be of benefit for you:

  • If you have pain in your hands which is undiagnosed this will need assessment and treatment. Further diagnostic tests may be required if necessary.
  • If you have wrist pain. Wrist repetitive strain injuries are a common condition. This may cause pain on the thumb side of the wrist.
Research has shown that we need to limit the use initially within splints, providing restriction and comfort to improve the quality of the tendon.
  • If you require splinting for function, eg if you have osteoarthritis mainly at the base of thumb. This can delay or prevent surgery.
  • If you have had hand surgery from the NHS or privately, such as tendon repairs, fractures of the hand or wrist, ligament repairs of the digits.
  • If you have suffered a stroke affecting your hand (suffering from contractures) requiring static splinting
  • If you have a sports injury.
Hand injuries are common within sports and often do not get the correct treatment which often then leads to deformities.
Seeing a private hand physiotherapist as soon as possible can get the correct diagnosis and early treatment to prevent chronic issues in the future.
  • If you have been diagnosed with any Rheumatological conditions which can impact the hand such as Rheumatoid arthritis or inflammatory arthritis.  Over time there is an increase in stiffness and deviations of the fingers which would benefit from splinting to prevent worsening function. Furthermore, strengthening exercises have been proven to reduce pain and improve function.
